Poignant and wide-eyed like its 9-year old protagonist Junior, Bad Hair is a delightful foray into a Venezuelan boy’s obsession with straightening his stubbornly curly hair. He dreams of being a singing performer and yearns to look the part, something his tough as nails, single mother, Marta, will never understand. Her disdain is compounded by her mother-in-law’s indulgence of Junior’s preening. When he tries out myriad solutions on umpteen occasions to smooth his hair down for a school photo, it arouses a wave of homophobia in Marta. While she is on the lookout for ways to ‘turn’ him straight, he is jealous of the loving intimacy she shares with his straight haired baby brother. The more he tries to look good for her, the more she pushes him away. Eventually, Junior is put on the spot and driven to make a painful choice.
