“Her breath was warm, like a fat guy’s armpit.” Canadian funnyman Brent Butt concocts a comedic update of Raymond Chandler’s dames and detective noir with a dry and sly fish-out-of-water yarn about Leo, a novelty salesman (foam fingers, engraved pencils, etc.), who gets mistaken for a Sam Spade type by sexy femme fatale Kyra (Amy Smart). Smitten by her “hottitude,” our hapless hero sets out to find her missing brother, a brilliant video-game designer who’s attracted a long list of potential enemies. Unfortunately, our clumsy gumshoe is more Bob Hope than Bob Mitchum, stumbling from one life-or-death situation to another with only his obnoxious pal Ernie (Anchorman‘s David Koechner) to confide in.
