As part of our Opening Night Party, students from the University of Michigan, part of a class taught by Sultan Sharrief on “Contemporary Media and Movement Building,” designed and shot a performance piece, integrating the festival audience with a modern dance piece to a live rendition of Adele’s “Hometown Glory.” Our initial plans for the opening night party were more traditional, but when Sultan approached us with this additional component, we knew we had to include it. Despite the challenges of the last-minute nature of film festivals, this addition fit with the intention of our festival to engage the community – engaging them through direct participation was a unique approach, but added very much to the festival feel of the Opening Night party.
