Part political satire, part murder mystery, John SaylesSilver City also touches on themes of exploitation of the press, the environment, and the working man. Things start off badly for Colorado gubernatorial candidate Dickie Pilager, the dim-witted scion of a powerful political family, whose drawl and use of malapropisms are suspiciously reminiscent of W’s. While filming a campaign ad meant to show off his red-blooded fishing skills, Pilager reels in a dead body, apparently belonging to an illegal immigrant. His chief advisor, Chuck Raven, leaps into damage-control mode, employing disgraced former reporter Danny O’Brien to ferret out the identity of the corpse. Meanwhile, it seems Dickie’s campaign is being bankrolled by a wealthy mine owner/polluter who’s hell-bent on protecting his interests. Sayles’ trademark stellar ensemble cast includes Danny Huston, Richard Dreyfuss, Chris Cooper, Kris Kristofferson, and memorably, Darryl Hannah as Dickie’s black-sheep stoner sister.
