It was simple. Kristin and Sandra wanted to get married for the same reason their parents did: they loved each other. The same applied to Paul and Jeff. But with California’s Proposition 8 banning same-sex marriages, the two couples were forbidden from pursuing their happiness. These couples were selected as the public faces of opposition to Prop 8 by an unlikely duo of attorneys. Progressive David Boies and ultraconservative Ted Olson were vigorous opponents during the legendary Bush v Gore decision. Now however, the two attorneys’ political motives take a backseat to their common cause: championing human rights. In The Case Against 8, we get the inside scoop on the overturning of the case, which finally allowed same-sex couples in California the right to marry. This revealing documentary deftly balances two stories, one about the strategy surrounding a landmark case, and one about families who unite to make things happen. –Cleveland International Film Festival
