Each year, Cinetopia welcomes submissions from Michigan filmmakers of all ages for our Detroit Voices Short Film Competition. With $6,000 in cash awards available to the winners, as well as networking and educational opportunities for all involved, Detroit Voices allows Michigan’s talented voices to showcase their work, receive feedback from industry veterans, and fund their future projects.

“Witnessing the triumphant spirit of the Michigan filmmakers who’ve competed in previous Detroit Voices, I’m excited for a breakthrough moment the 2020 lineup can bring to this year’s audience,” says Jamila Taylor, Detroit Voices Coordinator from 2016-2018 and for Cinetopia 2020. “Michigan filmmakers have brought hope, laughter, and shared sentiments to real life issues via screening their films at Detroit Voices. A promising number of filmmakers have already taken that leap of faith by submitting their workwill you answer the call for open submissions for 2020?”

With this year’s move of the festival to August 21-30, 2020, Cinetopia is happy to be able to extend the submission period for this year’s competition through June 15th. If you’re a Michigan filmmaker, know one, or are using this time to try your hand at filmmaking, please check out our Detroit Voices Short Film Competition!

When I saw the Detroit Voices screening in 2016, it gave me a goal to aspire to. I hustled in my restaurant job and eventually saved up enough money to shoot my first short script. It became a family project—my brother directed, my dad starred in the film, and my mom made the food for our cast and crew. It was important to me that we told a story that was specific to Michigan and utilized the immense talent we have here.” – Nick Rasmussen, director of Famous In Michigan
